Where BRIGHTSAM works, and why Mwanza Region.
Mwanza Region, Tanzania
The BRIGHTSAM trial is conducted in Mwanza Region, Tanzania, one of the country’s most populous regions and an area where severe acute malnutrition remains a significant public health concern among young children.
Participants are recruited and followed up across eight health care facilities spanning three council areas: Ilemela Municipality, Nyamagana Municipality, and Magu District.
These facilities range from smaller health care units to district hospitals, reflecting the varied levels of the routine health system through which children with severe acute malnutrition are actually identified and treated.
A high burden of child malnutrition
Mwanza Region has a high burden of child malnutrition and provides an important setting for testing interventions that can improve the recovery and health of children with severe acute malnutrition. Its mix of communities and health facilities allows research to be conducted under real-world conditions, with findings that can contribute to improving nutrition care in Tanzania.
